Madagascar is a huge island nation off the southeast coast of Africa. It's home to thousands of animal species, such as lemurs, found nowhere else, plus rainforests, beaches and reefs. Near the busy capital, Antananarivo, is Ambohimanga, a hillside complex of royal palaces and burial grounds, as well as the “Avenue of the Baobabs,” a dirt road lined by massive centuries-old trees.
In the west is Tsingy de Bemaraha, a reserve famed for its alienlike limestone pinnacles. To the east is Île Sainte-Marie, a resort destination, former pirate hideout, and whale breeding ground. In the south, Isalo National Park has steep canyons, sandstone pillars and rock pools. On the north coast is Nosy Be, a popular island resort with sheltered seas and big-game fishing. Endangered golden bamboo lemurs live in the forested hills of Ranomafana National Park, while geckos and chameleons can found in Masoala National Park.
